Bruern farm bread

The medieval Cotswolds made its fame and fortune with wool; today there are still plenty of sheep but also lots of bread and cakes.
You’re on holiday when staying with us at Eco Chic Holiday Cottages, so now is not the time for watching the calories. But be assured that what you consume here in the Cotswolds is so often locally sourced and made with love and centuries of heritage too. We consider ourselves very lucky to have some of the very best bakeries right on our doorstep.

Burford is just five minutes from The Chestnuts and 15 minutes from Culls Cottage. A charming medieval town full of delights including four of our favourite bakeries and cafes: Huffkins, Hugo Lovage Patisserie, The Bakery on The Hill and Lynwood.

Huffkins is a family-run bakery and café that has been serving loya; fans since around 1890. When its breads were delivered by horse and cart. Today there are a number of Huffkins in other Cotswolds towns but this is the original. Pride themselves on using locally milled flour, free-range eggs, and other Cotswolds-sourced ingredients.  Everythings freshly baked; from pastries to cakes, lovingly crafted using time-honoured recipes.  Including the quintessential Cotswold delicacy, the Lardy cake, which is a rich, layered sweet bread made with local flour, lard, sugar, spices, currants, and raisins. Its origins lie in Oxfordshire and neighbouring counties.  This is one of the best places to buy a traditional Lardy cake.

Almost opposite Huffkins and down a tiny alley enter Bakery on the Hill (The Little Bakery Company) this artisan bakery is a perfect spot for breakfast, lunch, or an afternoon sweet treat.  From their renowned Crunchy Sourdough and Malted Loaf to flaky croissants and seasonal pastries, their creations highlight traditional baking techniques and local ingredients.  Although small there are a number of places to sit and enjoy your purchases inside.

Further down the Burford High street on the same side as Huffkins is Hugo Lovage Patisserie. Blending French-inspired elegance with local flair. A relative newcomer in comparison to Huffkins it is run by Michelin-trained pastry chef Cindy Kosmala, and is rightly celebrated for beautifully crafted macarons, éclairs, Battenburg, and more—with gluten-free, dairy-free, and vegan options available too.

Further up The High Street is one of our very favourite cafes for superb coffee, sausage rolls and so much more. Lynwood café is not only great to eat in but we always buy a loaf of their Sourdough revolution bread to take home. You won’t find better. Lynwood also use the very best produce that our region can supply. Coffee from a roaster in Bristol. The bread is lovingly hand crafted in their bakery in Carterton using traditional sourdough slow fermentation methods. They source their blend of organic flours from Shipton Mill in Tetbury.

When staying at our holiday cottages you can be assured of rea Cotswolds treats right on your doorstep.
